description:
This undated letter to Rev. Dr. A. [?] by Samuel McClintock Hamill (1812-1889), was written on behalf of the Committee of the Philo Literary Society of Jefferson College. The letter welcomes the recipient to the “walls of Jefferson”, and notifies them that they have been appointed as an honorary member of the Society. It is mentioned that the Philo Literary Society, as well as the Franklin Literary Society, were founded in 1797. The letter also notifies the recipient that they are welcome to use the Society’s library, which contains 1300 volumes. The second page appears to be an essay, written on the topic of the Bible’s strong influence on Literature and Politics. Hamill describes how the morality instructed to man through the Bible has been crucial to the development of politics (in the United States), in a way that was missing to the politics of the Ancient Greeks and Romans, Spartans, Athenians, and Egyptians. It is unclear whether the letter on page 1 and the essay on page 2 are meant to be presented together, or if Hamill was using these pages for writing drafts, for different documents. Page 1 of 3.
